Direkt hinterm Brenner, im idyllischen Südtiroler Eisacktal, haben 2001 ein paar Jungs angefangen, Musik zu machen. Unkonventionell, bodenständig, geradlinig und ein bisschen rebellisch. Rockmusik eben.
Frei.Wild entwickelte sich ungezähmt, wie ihnen der Schnabel gewachsen war, spielte für einen Kasten Bier, produzierte im Probenraum ohne Allianzen zur Plattenindustrie Rockmusik mit deutschen Texten – laut, klar, leidenschaftlich. Geprägt von persönlichen Erlebnissen und gemeinsamen Erfahrungen, mit Schärfe kommentiert. Ein wuchtiger Mix aus hartem Deutschrock und Gänsehaut-Balladen. Songs mit Geschichten, die Mut machen, Grenzen überwinden und Hände reichen. Mit Haltung, Tiefe und der Freiheit, auch unbequem zu sein.
Frei.Wild hat mit der Direktheit der Sprache bis heute keinerlei Berührungsängste. Philipp, Jonas, Föhre und Zegga formulieren genau das, was sie auch fühlen. Und kommen damit an.
Auch auf dem deutschen Musikmarkt sprachen sich die jungen Deutschrocker aus Südtirol bald herum wie ein Lauffeuer. Die Menge begeisterte sich für den ungehobelten, selbstbewussten und urwüchsigen Charakter der Band und strömte in Scharen zu den Konzerten. Das Unverfälschte begeistert aus eigener Kraft die Massen – und machte Branchenleute sprachlos.
2009 stieß Frei.Wild auf ihren heutigen Band-Manager Stefan Harder. Durch den gemeinsam abgesteckten Kurs kaperte die Band mit „Hart am Wind“ endlich auch die Plattenstores und nahm auf der sich aufbäumenden Erfolgswelle richtig Fahrt auf. Frei.Wild wechselte ins Profi-Lager, die Bandmitglieder setzten alles auf eine Karte. Und die Szene verlangte nach mehr „Gegengift“ – 2010 fuhren die Südtiroler erstmals Platin ein. Auch „Feinde deiner Feinde“ (2012) reifte mit Platin und dem ersten Gold in Österreich erneut zum Chartstürmer. Als Initiator des Charity-Projekts „Wilde Flamme“ vereint Frei.Wild seit 2012 regelmäßig hochkarätige Musiker der Szene für den guten Zweck und spielt durch Benefiz-Singles wie Engel, Retter und Helden weit über 25.000 Euro an Spendengeldern ein.
In ihrer Heimat erobern sie im selben Jahr mit einem spektakulären Live-Event die Gipfel. Frei.Wild gründet 2012 mit Südtiroler Vereinen das mittlerweile größte Crossover Festival Norditaliens auf dem ehemaligen Nato-Gelände in Natz-Schabs. Die Alpen Flair-Familie rockt jährlich im Juni mit bis zu 50.0000 Besuchern unter der Fahne Südtirols.
Egal, ob Single, Studioalbum oder Live-Editions, „Durch Straßen, durch Dreck, ins Händemeer“ kämpft sich Frei.Wild Schulter an Schulter ins Bühnenlicht. Die polarisierende Band, um die nach einschneidenden Kontroversen aufgrund ihrer ersten ECHO-Nominierungen der Gegenwind immer lauter tobte, kann auch „Still“ (2013), legt 2019 „Still II“ nach, um dann wieder mit „Live in Frankfurt“ und zwei weiteren Live-Alben alle Register zu ziehen.
Frei.Wild zeigt als Gegenkultur zum etablierten Rock-Mainstream unbeugsam Haltung und Kante, bezieht weiterhin „Opposition“ (2015). „15 Jahre Deutschrock & SKAndale“ feiert 2016 als Bandjubiläum einen Meilenstein. „Rivalen und Rebellen“ eroberte 2018 als viertes Studioalbum in Folge Platz 1 der deutschen Charts und durchbrach nach nur vier Wochen die goldene Schallmauer von 100.000 verkauften Einheiten. Platin für über 200.000 verkaufte Einheiten folgte nach nicht einmal eineinhalb Jahren. Rund 330.000 Menschen besuchten die an „Rivalen und Rebellen“ anschließenden Konzerte. 13 Gold-Awards und sieben Platinauszeichnungen aus dem In- und Ausland schmückten damals bereits die Frei.Wild-Studios in Brixen. Rund 200.000 Einheiten pro Album setzte Frei.Wild ab und verkaufte Hallen mit einer Kapazität von 13.000 Besuchern aus. 2019 legte Frei.Wild mit „Unsere Lieblingslieder“ eine ebenso augenzwinkernde wie selbstironische Coversammlung auf – ein kleiner Seitenhieb an jene Bands, die sich zuvor kritisch über die Südtiroler geäußert hatten.
„Wir schaffen Deutsch.Land“ (2020) sprengte mit #1 und Platin im Rücken die Hallen. Zum 20-jährigen Bandjubiläum brach Frei.Wild mit der gleichnamigen Tour auf, die Arenen zu erobern. Die Pandemie bremste die Pläne aus – live gefeiert wurde das Jubiläum 2023 mit voller Wucht, die Tour entfesselte die aufgestaute Energie. An die Lockdown-Zeit erinnern gleich zwei Alben. „Corona Quarantäne Tape - Alles wird gut“ und „Corona Tape II - Attacke ins Glück“ setzten als Mutmacher der allgemeinen Verunsicherung Zuversicht und Aufbruchsstimmung entgegen.
Bei Frei.Wild tummeln sich Jung und Alt, Punk, Biker, Rocker und auch der ganz normale Partygänger oder Metalhead. Doch so unterschiedlich das Publikum auch sein mag – der Protest gegen gesellschaftliche Eliten, für Meinungsvielfalt und das Recht auf Unterschiedlichkeit schweißen zusammen. Jedes Konzert ein Händemeer, lauthals und textsicher mitsingend, fast so, als ob endlich jemand das ausspricht, was jeder denkt, und als ob alle durch die Band ein Ventil gefunden hätten, um das endlich herauszuschreien. Befeuert von der Wut der Auflehnung, dem Mut, ganz einfach so zu sein, wie man ist, und dem eingeschworenen Zusammenhalt der Frei.Wild-Familie.
Musik als Ausdruck von Eigenständigkeit und Lebensrealität. Jedes Live-Konzert eine Mischung aus Punk, Schlager, Rock, Bierzelt, Hymne, Feiern und Party – eine frei und wild zusammengewürfelte Gesangsstunde eben, mit allem, was Menschlichkeit ausmacht. Eine Deutschrock-Gegenkultur, deren Protest darin besteht, sich von einer künstlich und abstrakt gewordenen Gesellschaft nichts vormachen lassen zu wollen.
Mit „Immer unter Feuer“ und der gleichnamigen Tour 2026 hat Frei.Wild vielleicht sogar das markanteste Kapitel seiner Bandgeschichte geschrieben. Das im November 2025 veröffentlichte Album „Immer unter Feuer“ bescherte den Südtirolern mit Platz 1 in Deutschland bereits zum achten Mal die Spitze der offiziellen Albumcharts. Die gleichnamige große Tour, veranstaltet von Live Nation, dem international führenden Live-Entertainment-Unternehmen, füllte im Mai 2026 in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz die Arenen.
Frei.Wild-Frontmann Philipp Burger steht nicht nur als Sänger und Songwriter im Fokus. Er ist Zimmermann, Familienvater und Archehof-Landwirt. Seine Autobiografie „Freiheit mit Narben – Mein Weg von rechts nach überall“ (www.freiheitmitnarben.com) wurde mit Platz1 zum Spiegel-Bestseller Sachbuch. Sie reflektiert seine Jugendzeit als rechter Skin, den Ausstieg und seine persönliche Entwicklung sowie die Themen Verantwortung und zweite Chancen. Die biografische Aufarbeitung unterstreicht seinen Anspruch, Dinge offen zu benennen, statt sie zu beschönigen.

Frei.Wild developed untamed, doing things their own way, playing for a case of beer, producing rock music with German lyrics in their rehearsal space without any ties to the record industry—loud, clear, passionate. To this day, Frei.Wild has no qualms about using direct language. Philipp, Jonas, Föhre, and Zegga express exactly what they feel—and it resonates with their audience.
Word of these young German rockers from South Tyrol soon spread like wildfire on the German music scene as well. The crowd was captivated by the band’s unpolished, self-assured, and authentic character and flocked to their concerts in droves. Their unadulterated style captivated the masses all on its own—and left industry insiders speechless.
In 2009, Frei.Wild met their current band manager, Stefan Harder. By charting a course together, the band finally took the record stores by storm with “Hart am Wind” and really gained momentum on the surging wave of success. Frei.Wild made the leap to the professional ranks, and the band members put all their eggs in one basket. And the scene demanded more “antidote”—in 2010, the South Tyroleans earned their first platinum certification. “Feinde deiner Feinde” (2012) also became a chart-topper, earning platinum status and the band’s first gold certification in Austria. As the initiator of the “Wilde Flamme” charity project, Frei.Wild has regularly brought together top-tier musicians from the scene for a good cause since 2012 and has raised well over 25,000 euros in donations through charity singles such as “Engel,” “Retter,” and “Helden.”
In their home region, they took the scene by storm that same year with a spectacular live event. In 2012, Frei.Wild teamed up with South Tyrolean organizations to launch what has since become Northern Italy’s largest crossover festival on the former NATO base in Natz-Schabs. Every June, the Alpen Flair family rocks the stage under the South Tyrolean flag, drawing up to 50,000 visitors.
Whether it’s a single, a studio album, or live recordings, “Through the streets, through the mud, into a sea of hands,” Frei.Wild fights its way into the spotlight, shoulder to shoulder. The polarizing band—which faced increasingly fierce backlash following major controversies sparked by their first ECHO nominations—also released “Still” (2013), followed by “Still II” in 2019, before pulling out all the stops again with “Live in Frankfurt” and two additional live albums.
As a counterculture to the established rock mainstream, Frei.Wild displays an unyielding attitude and edge, continuing to take a stand with “Opposition” (2015). “15 Years of German Rock & SKAndale” marked a milestone in 2016 as the band celebrated its anniversary. “Rivalen und Rebellen,” their fourth consecutive studio album, reached No. 1 on the German charts in 2018 and surpassed the 100,000-unit sales mark after just four weeks. Platinum certification for over 200,000 units sold followed in less than a year and a half. Around 330,000 people attended the concerts following the release of “Rivalen und Rebellen.” By that time, 13 gold awards and seven platinum awards from Germany and abroad were already adorning the Frei.Wild studios in Brixen. Frei.Wild sold around 200,000 copies per album and filled venues with a capacity of 13,000 attendees. In 2019, Frei.Wild released “Unsere Lieblingslieder,” a cover album that was as tongue-in-cheek as it was self-deprecating—a subtle dig at those bands that had previously criticized the South Tyroleans.

Proprio alle spalle del Brennero, nell’idilliaca Valle Isarco in Alto Adige, nel 2001 alcuni ragazzi hanno iniziato a fare musica. In modo anticonformista, con i piedi per terra, diretto e un po’ ribelle. Insomma, musica rock.
I Frei.Wild si sono sviluppati senza freni, seguendo il proprio istinto, suonando in cambio di una cassa di birra, producendo nella sala prove, senza alleanze con l’industria discografica, musica rock con testi in tedesco – forte, chiara, appassionata. Ispirata da esperienze personali e condivise, commentata con incisività. Un mix potente di rock tedesco duro e ballate da brividi. Canzoni con storie che infondono coraggio, superano i confini e tendono la mano. Con carattere, profondità e la libertà di essere anche scomodi.

Anche sul mercato musicale tedesco la fama dei giovani rocker altoatesini si diffuse ben presto a macchia d’olio. Il pubblico rimase affascinato dal carattere schietto, sicuro di sé e genuino della band e accorse a frotte ai concerti. L’autenticità conquistò le masse con la propria forza – lasciando senza parole gli addetti ai lavori.
Nel 2009 i Frei.Wild hanno incontrato il loro attuale manager Stefan Harder. I Frei.Wild vendevano circa 200.000 copie per album e riempivano palazzetti con una capienza di 13.000 spettatori. Nel 2019 i Frei.Wild hanno pubblicato «Unsere Lieblingslieder», una raccolta di cover tanto ironica quanto autoironica – una piccola frecciatina rivolta a quelle band che in precedenza si erano espresse in modo critico nei confronti dei sudtirolesi.

In occasione del ventennale della band, i Frei.Wild sono partiti con l’omonimo tour alla conquista delle arene. Ai concerti dei Frei.Wild si mescolano giovani e meno giovani, punk, motociclisti, rocker, ma anche semplici amanti delle feste o metallari. Per quanto il pubblico possa essere eterogeneo, la protesta contro le élite sociali, a favore della pluralità di opinioni e del diritto alla diversità, unisce tutti. Ogni concerto è un mare di mani, che cantano a squarciagola e a memoria i testi, quasi come se finalmente qualcuno dicesse ad alta voce ciò che tutti pensano e come se tutti avessero trovato nella band uno sfogo per gridarlo finalmente a gran voce. Alimentati dalla rabbia della ribellione, dal coraggio di essere semplicemente se stessi e dalla coesione incrollabile della famiglia Frei.Wild.
La musica come espressione di autonomia e della realtà della vita. Ogni concerto dal vivo è un mix di punk, musica popolare, rock, tendone da birra, inni, festeggiamenti e festa – insomma, una lezione di canto libera e selvaggiamente eterogenea, con tutto ciò che costituisce l’umanità. Una controcultura del rock tedesco, la cui protesta consiste nel non volersi far ingannare da una società diventata artificiale e astratta.
Con «Immer unter Feuer» e l’omonimo tour del 2026, i Frei.Wild hanno forse scritto il capitolo più significativo della loro storia. L’album «Immer unter Feuer», pubblicato nel novembre 2025, ha regalato ai sudtirolesi per l’ottava volta il primo posto nelle classifiche ufficiali degli album in Germania. Il grande tour omonimo, organizzato da Live Nation, azienda leader a livello internazionale nel settore dell’intrattenimento dal vivo, ha riempito le arene in Germania, Austria e Svizzera nel maggio 2026.
